Since 1886, the Statue of Liberty's torch has symbolically lit the way to America. Formally known as "Liberty Enlightening the World," the statue was built in honor of the United States' alliance with France during the American Revolution. The statue was designed and engineered in France by Frédéric-Auguste Bartholdi and Gustave Alexandre Eiffel (of Tower fame), while American architect, Richard Morris Hunt, designed the pedestal. The 151-foot tall statue is made even more impressive by its base and pedestal, which bring the total height to 305 feet -- 354 steps! The distinctive star-shaped wall surrounding the pedestal was part of an existing fort on the island. The Statue of Liberty debuted in Paris, and was then dismantled into 350 pieces for shipping to the U.S., where it was dedicated in 1886. Between 1892 and 1954, approximately 16 million immigrants passed the Statue of Liberty on their way to Ellis Island. In fact, ships entering the harbor were known to tip precariously as newcomers rushed to one side, eager to glimpse this symbol of liberty.
