At the corner of Lexington and 42nd Street stands one of the world’s most stunning architectural jewels. Built in 1930 by the romantic vision of William Van Alen to house the corporation for which it was named, the Chrysler Building is the finest skyscraper of the Art Deco Period. Exterior walls of white-glazed brick lead the eye straight up to a tiered vertex sculpted in stainless steel. (The seven-story pinnacle was constructed inside the building and then dramatically raised into place.) Gargoyles sit on the outside corners of the building much like hood ornaments on a car. In fact, many tease that the building is a prime example of architecture-for-advertising in that so many automotive motifs are utilized in the decoration of the building. Inside, the lobby is finished in rich, red African marble, and the elevator doors are inlaid with cherry wood. Could ever a building better exemplify the outright verve of the era? The Chrysler Building is 77 stories tall, and was the World’s Tallest Building until the completion of The Empire State Building in 1931.
